Holy Fools Theatre

Where theatre meets activism!

Don't miss this LIMITED RUN of "WE ARE PUSSY RIOT OR EVERYTHING IS PR" running for these dates ONLY: 7:30 pm June 21 (Preview), June 22 - 25, 27-29 and July 1st at St. David's United Church 3303 Capitol Hill Crescent NW, Calgary, AB.

Based on the trial of the three Pussy Riot members who were arrested following a 48-second peaceful protest in an Orthodox church in Russia, the story is told through the eyes of an inmate arrested for distributing pamphlets about the Russian Constitution's Article 31 re: having the right to hold demonstrations peacefully.

This one-act play is a satirical performance piece that is a rollercoaster of an experience; impactful and silly at the same time!

Pussy Riot is a feminist and pro-LGBTQ+ protest group formed in 2011. They're also a punk band! OF NOTE: Recently, Pussy Riot was awarded the Woody Guthrie Prize given to artists who employ their craft as activists. (Woody was an American singer/songwriter commemorated for fighting war and injustice through the medium of music.)

NOTE: show contains loud chanting, gunshots, and profanity. No age restrictions.

Our Approach

At Holy Fools Theatre, we create performances that are not only entertaining but also thought-provoking. We aim to challenge social norms and promote inclusivity through our work.

Our goal is to go beyond mere entertainment and create performances that stimulate thought and discussion. Our productions are designed to challenge societal conventions and promote diversity and acceptance in all forms. We know that theatre has the ability to inspire and educate. That's why we take great care in choosing thought-provoking stories that resonate with audiences long after the final curtain call.

We strive to create a safe and welcoming space for all who attend our shows, regardless of their background or beliefs. At Holy Fools Theatre, we are committed to using our art to make a positive impact on society.

Our Mission

As a group of queer folx and allies, we strive to create a safe space for expression, both on and offstage. Our ultimate goal is to use theatre as a tool for social change.

At the core of our mission is the belief that everyone deserves to have their voice heard and their story told, and we will continue to use theatre as a platform for amplifying marginalized voices and promoting equality.

About Us

Holy Fools Theatre was founded as a revolutionary act by co-Artistic Directors, Mira Maschmeyer and Leanne Million. We work with artists who are queer and queer allies to promote a safe space for LGBTQ+ folx in theatre in Calgary, Alberta.

The name "Holy Fools" refers to the practice of "yurodivy" or Russian saints in Russia who would appear insane as they enacted the problems and issues occuring in the world in order to reveal their guidance to the public.

"[Holy Fools] often employ shocking and unconventional behavior to challenge accepted norms."- Wikipedia

Oh! and in case you're curious...
